With profound sorrow, we bid farewell to a cherished member of the Newburyport community, Aster Ursula Shepard, who graced Market Square with her enchanting melodies and left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who had the privilege of hearing her play. Aster passed away on March 15th 2024, leaving behind a legacy of music, courage, and inspiration.

Born David Bishop, Aster courageously embraced her true identity, living authentically and fearlessly. Her journey was one of resilience and unwavering determination, in life as well as in her music, a testament to the strength of the human spirit.

Aster was a machinist by trade and an extremely talented and versatile musician, proficient in a multitude of instruments. She taught the flute, guitar, and harp to many relatives and friends to performance level. She was a member of the Merrimack Valley Philharmonic Orchestra and first violin in the Whittier Chamber Orchestra.

Her presence in the Newburyport community served as a reminder of the importance of embracing diversity and celebrating individuality. She was an active member of the Newburyport Unitarian Universalist Church and played many times for the congregation. Through her artistry and her unwavering authenticity, she touched countless lives and left an indelible imprint on all who knew her.

She leaves behind sons Eric Bishop, Ian Bishop, and Aaron Bishop, her siblings Jeanne Bishop, John Bishop, Steve Bishop, Ann Lacey [and husband James], Barbara Garrett [and husband Wayne], and several nieces and nephews. She is also fondly remembered by her friend Ritchard Triandafilou and former wife, Maria Poulos, with whom she shared many cherished memories.

Visiting hours will be held on Saturday, March 23, 2024, from 3 to 6 P.M. at the Elliott, Woodworth & Rogers Family Funeral Home, 35 Green Street, Newburyport, MA Newburyport.
