Robert W. Steer, Jr., 84, of Merrimac, MA, passed away after a short illness peacefully surrounded by his family on November 21, 2023.
Born in Haverhill, MA, Bob was the son of the late Loretta M. (Morin) and Robert W. Steer, Sr.
A 1956 graduate of St. James High School, Bob went on to earn his Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree at Merrimack College and his Master and Doctor of Science in Engineering degrees at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
After schooling, Dr. Steer returned to Merrimack College to serve as Professor & Department of Engineering Chair. In 1969, he founded Frequency Devices, Inc., Haverhill, MA. He was proud to employ area workers for several years in his innovative business until his retirement at age 60.
Bob loved his many dogs over the years. He enjoyed biking, lake boating, good food, many design projects and helping his children & friends. He was a generous man.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Julia Steer; his children, Linda Steer, Mary Plante (Tom), Michael Steer (Cheryl), David Steer (Diana), Geoffrey Steer, Kelli Steer and host-son Reginald Black (Kay); Sister-in-law, Peg Coughlan; nieces, Shey Coughlan (Mars) & Paula Coughlan; 12 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren and several friends and relatives. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his son, Daniel Steer.
Calling hours for Bob will be held on November 28, 2023 from 4 P.M. to 7 P.M. at the Highland Chapel of Paul C. Rogers Family Funeral Home, 2 Hillside Avenue, Amesbury. A Funeral Service will be held at the same location on November 29, 2023 at 10 A.M.
