It is with great sadness and deep respect, that we announce the passing of Raymond R. Glenn, Jr., a devoted husband, father, and Marine, who embodied the Corps’ motto “Semper Fidelis,” meaning “Always Faithful.” Raymond passed away peacefully at the Port Healthcare Center in Newburyport at the age of 84, with family by his side.
Raymond was born in Warren, Ohio, where he met and married the love of his life, Judith, with whom he spent 56 years until her passing. They have two children, Lane and Nikol, and four grandchildren. He is the son of the late Raymond Robert Glenn and May Irene Plant, and brother of Gail Glenn and Eileen Kane.
He enlisted in the Marine Corps and spent twenty years in service to his country, including two tours in Vietnam, where he took up running and earned the Navy Commendation Medal by recruiting a bunch of fellow leathernecks to run with him, build morale, and turn around a struggling but crucial aircraft supply squadron.
Back home again years later, with the discipline and perseverance of a long-distance runner, he would rise by 4:00 a.m. each day, pound the streets for ten or fifteen miles, ride his bike to work, come home for his vegetarian dinner, and go to bed by 8:00 p.m. to get up and do it all over again.
In 1982 he ran the Boston Marathon in three hours (and added the blue t-shirt with the Mercury-winged sneaker on it to his collection of dozens of race jerseys).
After living all over the country and around the world in the Marines, Raymond’s second career was in the oil industry, with jobs that took him to Oklahoma and to Texas, where he spent twenty years before being diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease and moving to Massachusetts to be with family.
Raymond will be deeply missed by his son, Lane and his wife Margaret Glenn of Amesbury, MA, and by his daughter, Nikol and her husband Jeff Ware of Oklahoma City, OK. He adored his grandchildren, Thomasina and Zoë Glenn, and Katie and Olivia Ware.
Raymond was one of the most disciplined and dutiful men his family, friends and anyone who met him had ever known. He always did what he said he would do, and when he committed to something, he went all the way.
The family will be arranging a service and interment with military honors at a later date at the National Veterans Cemetery in Bourne, Massachusetts.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots at www.toysfortots.org.
Arrangements under the direction of Paul C. Rogers Family Funeral Home, 2 Hillside Avenue, Amesbury, MA 01913.
