Ruth MacLean Landreth, age 81, of Newburyport, passed away peacefully at Anna Jaques Hospital on March 5, 2025, surrounded by her loving family and friends.
Born in Biddeford, Maine, on February 5, 1944, Ruth was the daughter of the late Eliot B. and Carol I. (Holmes) MacLean. She graduated from Clemson University in 1967 and earned a master’s degree from Western Carolina University in 1971. Ruth dedicated her career to teaching, spending more than 47 years in education. She taught third grade in Seneca, South Carolina, before moving to Massachusetts in 1972, where she continued teaching third grade at Salisbury Elementary School. Ruth was passionate about teaching and was truly invested in every child she taught.
One of Ruth’s favorite places was Pequawket Lake in Limington, Maine. She enjoyed kayaking, looking for turtles, listening to loons, and feeding chipmunks. Many happy family memories were made there, and she looked forward to visiting each summer.
Ruth loved playing the piano, reading, nature and plants, and her furry friends. She cherished her extended family and took joy in making others happy, especially her three children and two granddaughters.
A fun-loving mother, Ruth supported her children in every endeavor they undertook. She had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh.
Ruth is survived by her daughters, Susannah Landreth and Molly Evak; son-in-law, Tanner Evak; and two granddaughters, Hazel May and Harper Dean Evak. She was predeceased by her son Travis Landreth, who passed away in 2001, and by her husband of 40 years, Dennis Landreth, who died in 2007.
Per Ruth’s wishes, she will be laid to rest at Oak Hill Cemetery during a private graveside service. Elliott, Woodworth & Rogers Family Funeral Home, located at 35 Green Street, Newburyport, MA, is handling the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Travis Eliot Landreth Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Institution for Savings, 93 State Street, Newburyport, MA.
