Suzzane (Colby) Carey

Suzanne (Colby) Carey “Sue”, age 77, longtime resident of Merrimac, passed away Sunday afternoon, December 17, 2023, peacefully surrounded by her family at Anna Jacques Hospital in Newburyport.

Born in Haverhill, April 18th, 1946, Sue was the middle child of 3 of the late Fredrick and Florence (McKinnon) Colby and attended Haverhill High School.

She met the love of her life, Jim, when she was a teenager but it wasn’t until after high school she gave him a shot. She was 19 when Jim enlisted in the navy and it took them to Oakland, California, where by the time she was 21 has welcomed two sons.

After returning home, they bought a house in Merrimac in the 70’s where they both lived until they passed. She worked at Lucent Technology until she changed her career to the Paige School cafeteria where she retired and helped babysit her grandchildren.

She was always ready to head down to Foxwoods and spend money hoping to win big, and spend Sundays watching the NASCAR races. But her favorite thing of all was spending time with her sons and her grandchildren and great-grandson.

She is survived by her son, James Carey and wife Tara; her daughter-in-law, Jessica Carey, her granddaughters, Courtney, Izabella and Madison Carey; grandson, Matthew Carey and fiancée, Lilly; great-grandson, Declan Dunham and a special goddaughter, Nicole Nadeau, along with her sister, Kathleen and husband, Joe Young; sisters-in-law, Cathy Carey and Pat Colby, and brother-in-law, Paul Carey and his wife, Marie. She was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Michael (Big Jim) Carey, son, John Carey on January 3rd 2016, and her brother Fredrick Colby Jr. Sue was an angel in disguise and her light will be missed so dearly by so many including countless nieces, nephews and friends.

Visiting hours will be Friday, January 5, 2024 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Highland Chapel of Paul C. Rogers Family Funeral Home, 2 Hillside Avenue, Amesbury. Funeral Services at the funeral home will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2024 at 11 a.m.
