William Bill McDonald, 93, of Merrimac MA, passed away on March 11, 2024, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital in Portsmouth, NH. He was born on February 12, 1931, in Insch Scotland. He emigrated to the United States in 1949 and proudly served in the US Army during the Korean War, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to his new country. His dedication during his military service will always be remembered.

During the years Bill was active in many Scottish organizations, and through those he was able to stay connected to his roots. He was also a Mason and was a member of Bethesda Lodge for over 65 years.

Following his retirement, Bill found joy in playing golf at various courses in the US and his homeland of Scotland. He spent 25 retired years working at Campbell Scottish Highland Golf Course in Salem, NH, as a starter, where he proudly kept the golfers in line and on time.

Bill was a devoted husband and father. He is survived by his daughter Lesley MacInnis, his son Alan McDonald and his daughter-in-law Karen McDonald. He is also survived by his 5 grandchildren (Ryan MacInnis, Kimberly Manion, Kerrianne Provost, Andrew McDonald and Kyle McDonald and their spouses Amy MacInnis, Ian Mannion and Jared Provost) and 5 great-grandchildren (Sean, Riley, Connor, Audrey and Nora). He is survived by his sisters Elizabeth Young and Flora McDonald and his brother Robert Bert McDonald and also by his sister-in-law Edith Burgess and brother-in-law Raymond Burgess and many nieces and nephews.

Bill is preceded in death by his wife Lilian, for whom they shared 59 years of a wonderful marriage. He is also predeceased by his son-in-law Richard MacInnis, his brother Sandy McDonald and his sisters Sheila Maitland and Annie Cole.

Bill loved his family, his service to his country, and his passion for golf will forever be cherished and remembered by all who knew him. He leaves behind a legacy of strength, kindness, and a deep love for his family.

Rest in peace, William Bill McDonald.

Visiting hours will be held Friday, March 15, 2024 from 4 to 7 P.M. at Paul C. Rogers Family Funeral Home, 36 West Main Street, Merrimac.
