Winifred M. (Brennan) Linnane
August 29, 1929 - July 23, 2024
Winifred M. Linnane, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away at the age of 94 on July 23rd, 2024. Winifred was born on August 29th, 1929, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to Agnes and Frederick Brennan. She was one of four children, sharing her early years with her brothers Frederick, Edmond, and David Brennan.
A devoted homemaker and loving mother, Winifred raised her four children—Linda Martin, Mark Linnane, Susan Romasco, and Lisa Linnane—with unwavering dedication and care. In addition, she loved and cared for her grandchildren - Paul Martin, Rachel Martin, Antonio Romasco, Rebecca Romasco and Marlaina Linnane. Her family was her greatest joy, and everything she did was for those she loved. She was immensely proud of the achievements of her children and grandchildren, believing deeply in their strength and intelligence. Her love for each of them was boundless, and she cherished every accomplishment they reached. Winifred’s wisdom, humor, and warm-hearted nature will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Winifred also enjoyed a long and fulfilling career at Harvard University, where she formed lasting connections with students and faculty through lively conversations. Her warmth and ability to connect with others made her time there memorable, leaving a lasting impression on many until her retirement. Even after retiring, Winifred couldn’t resist staying active in the community. She returned to the long-standing Cambridge restaurant, The S&S, where she reconnected with old friends and made many new ones. Her presence there was so cherished that people would often visit just to see her. At The S&S, Winifred not only enjoyed the company of longtime friends but also formed some of her closest bonds, and she was valued for her joyful spirit and genuine friendships.
In her later years, Winifred found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She was a talented seamstress who crafted clothes for many of her children and grandchildren. She was also an exceptional baker, known especially for her chocolate chip cookies. Additionally, she was an avid reader who could devour almost a book a day and had a passion and talent for solving almost any crossword puzzle. Summers spent by the pool with her youngest granddaughter, Marlaina Linnane, were some of her happiest moments, filled with laughter and love.
Winifred’s dedication to her family was truly seen in her relationship with Marlaina. She was a constant source of support, helping Marlaina through every stage of her education—from pre-K to high school and even onto college and the completion of her master’s degree. Winifred was able to witness the fruits of her love and guidance when Marlaina secured her first real job, a milestone that was a testament to the profound influence Winifred had on her granddaughter’s life.
Winifred leaves behind a legacy of kindness, strength, and love—values that will continue to live on in her children, grandchildren, and all those who had the privilege of knowing her.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, September 1st, 2024, from 2-5 pm at the Highland Chapel of Paul C. Rogers Family Funeral Home, 2 Hillside Avenue, Amesbury, Massachusetts, where family and friends will gather to celebrate her life and cherish the many memories she leaves behind.
